NTEU Scholarships 2023

The NTEU will again be offering two scholarships in 2023.

The application deadline for both scholarships is Friday 25 August 2023. A decision will be made in September 2023.

The Carolyn Allport Scholarship for Postgraduate Feminist Studies by Research is available for any student undertaking postgraduate feminist studies in any discipline, awarding $5000 per year for a maximum of 3 years to the successful applicant.

The Joan Hardy Scholarship for Postgraduate Nursing Studies by Research is available for any student undertaking a study of nurses, nursing culture or practices, or historical aspects of nursing as a lay or professional practice. A sum of $5000 will be paid in two instalments; half on the awarding of the Scholarship and the remainder on evidence of submission of the thesis.

CAROLYN ALLPORT SCHOLARSHIP

For postgraduate feminist studies, by research

$5000 per year for a maximum of 3 years

This postgraduate scholarship is being offered by the NTEU in recognition of Dr Carolyn Allport, a trade unionist, a feminist and an academic.

The scholarship will be available for any student undertaking postgraduate feminist studies, by research, in any discipline. The scholarship will be paid in yearly instalments for up a maximum of 3 years.

Dr Allport contributed to the leadership and development of the NTEU in her 16 years as National President, from 1994 to 2010. Described as a ‘warrior for women’, Carolyn was tenacious in advocating for women’s rights to employment equity. She was particularly influential in the struggle for paid parental establishing the NTEU as the leader in setting high benchmarks for other unions and employers to match. Carolyn is also recognised as a leading advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, employment and social justice. Within the NTEU structure, she was a driving force to ensure that Indigenous business is core NTEU business. Prior to becoming NTEU National President, Carolyn worked as an academic for over 20 years at Macquarie University in New South Wales. Her teaching and research publications were in the areas of economic history, urban politics, public housing and women’s history. Carolyn became a prominent lobbyist at both the national and international levels including as a consultant for UNESCO, through Education International.

Applications

Applicants must be currently enrolled in postgraduate studies, by research, in an academic award of an Australian public university.

What you need to submit:

There is no application form to complete, but applications should include the following information:

  1. Details of current study focus – a summary (300-500 words) of the question being examined and its value to feminism, including information on the method/methodology of your study.
  2. Current CV.
  3. Two written references – e.g. from your primary and/or secondary supervisor, your unit manager if they are involved in your thesis or are supervising you in your thesis, the head of research committee. References need to be no more than 1-page max and briefly outline the merit of your study and expected completion date.
  4. Evidence of award enrolment – from your university.
  5. Expected date of completion of award – state the date and ask your referees to make a note of this in their referee letter and ask the relevant research office to confirm this.
  6. Evidence of trade union membership – e.g. your membership number from the relevant Union (e.g. NTEU or other relevant trade union). If you are not a member of any trade union, and you are currently studying and/or teaching/lecturing at your university, then I suggest you join the NTEU. To join, go to: https://www.nteu.au/join

JOAN HARDY SCHOLARSHIP

For postgraduate nursing studies, by research, $5000

This postgraduate scholarship is being offered by the NTEU in recognition of the late Joan Hardy (who died in 2003), a trade unionist and advocate of higher education unionism for over 30 years. During this time Joan held many positions at local and state levels. She was the first woman President of UACA (one of the predecessors to NTEU) a position she occupied for five years. Joan was a tireless advocate for union amalgamation and was a key negotiator in the formation of NTEU, becoming Vice-President when the Union was formed in 1993.

Applications

The Scholarship is available for any student undertaking a study, by research, of nurses, nursing culture or practices, or historical aspects of nursing as a lay or professional practice. The student need not therefore be or have been a nurse and can be undertaking the study in disciplines/schools other than nursing.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in postgraduate studies, by research, in an academic award of an Australian public university, and expect to submit the thesis within one year of being awarded the Scholarship.

The Scholarship will be paid in two instalments: half on the awarding of the Scholarship and the remainder on evidence of submission of the thesis.
