Motion passed! NTEU RMIT endorse more action for new deal at all-member meeting (30 April)

After years waiting for a new enterprise agreement, NTEU RMIT members are ramping up the pressure on management to deliver a new enterprise agreement with improved pay and conditions.

At the latest all-member meeting, on Tuesday 30 April, the following motion was passed (see below):

This meeting of members notes that the log of claims includes strongly and deeply felt issues, including academic workloads; maintenance of academic decasualisation pathways (ACDF); remote working rights for professional staff; professional workloads; equality of superannuation for all members; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment targets ; improvements for casual staff and wage increases of 5% p.a., along with other claims in working conditions for RMIT members.
The branch has not accepted any management claims such as education-focussed academic roles, changes to superannuation etc.

This meeting of members’ notes that there has been some movement on the NTEU key claims, but a significant number of claims remain unresolved, especially wages. This meeting therefore recommends an escalation of industrial action to include:

  1. Continuance of all current bans on Workday, SATS & SAMs indefinitely
  2. A ban on the uploading of assessment results into the online portal (RPO) effective from 10 June 2024, noting all results will still be available to students via CANVAS.
  3. The NTEU bargaining team to organise regular bargaining meetings, to take place from 14 May 2024 onwards.
  4. In the event of no agreement on a new Enterprise Agreement by early June 2024, a one and a half day strike commencing with a rally outside the meeting of University Council on Thursday 13 June.
  5. Should bargaining continue beyond July 2024, a further strike of a duration to be determined by members at the next meeting, but commencing with a rally outside the meeting of University Council on Monday 26 August 2024.
  6.  Demand a signed agreement by 11 August – Open Day. No agreement and we strike and disrupt RMIT’s primary recruitment drive by showing prospective students (and their parents) what RMIT is really like.

As many other workers around the sector enjoy the benefits of new agreements with better pay and conditions at their institutions, why are staff at RMIT being left behind in a cost of living crisis? Management refuses to offer a decent pay rise, workload relief or secure work; they’re seeking to abolish hard fought and long standing conditions.

Enough is enough - it's time to take action!
