The Albanese Labor Government has just announced a groundbreaking decision that will positively impact the lives of working women across the nation. Starting from 1 July 2025, the government will pay superannuation on Commonwealth Parental Leave Payments. This landmark victory comes after more than a decade of relentless campaigning by unions to achieve equal retirement outcomes for women.
Currently, Commonwealth Paid Parental Leave is the only type of leave that does not include superannuation contributions. Considering that women make up an overwhelming 99.5% of the 180,000 parental leave payment recipients each year, this disparity has disproportionately affected women's retirement savings.
The government's decision marks a significant step towards addressing this glaring gap in Australia's retirement income system. Parental leave, just like annual and sick leave, is a fundamental workplace entitlement, and this change acknowledges that fact.
This proud union win is a testament to the tireless efforts of union members from all corners of the country who have campaigned for this change over many years. It demonstrates the power of collective action and the impact that union members can have in driving and achieving positive change.
However, there is still more work to be done. By joining the nearly two million members who are making a difference, you can be part of a movement that is building a future where every woman can retire with the dignity and security they deserve. Join the NTEU here.
