Deakin's $2.9 million unpaid wages pay-back: could you be owed?

11 November 2025

National Tertiary Education Union welcomes Deakin University's commitment to backpay casual staff for historic marking underpayments.

Deakin is now reaching out to make offers of remediation, with roughly 440 staff affected by $2.9 million in underpayments over eight years [read more].

But we believe there could be more current or former casual employees out there who are owed backpay, with the total figure for repayments expected to go beyond $3million as more staff come forward.

If you have concerns about the calculation, or if you've been missed, NTEU is here for you!

We raised the issue and ran the case. Now we want to ensure you're fairly and fully remediated. But we can only represent our members.

Why join NTEU?

If you're a member, NTEU can act on your behalf, to challenge Deakin if you've been left out or underpaid (again!).
If you're not a member, you're relying on Deakin to get it right on its own...
We're here to support you to ensure you're compensated fairly.

Could you be owed backpay? Want to learn more?

Come to our information session, on Monday 17 November at 1pm.
