Jokes aside, just a quick email to update you on our industrial action, which continues tomorrow morning.
We had an excellent turnout today at the Chancellery Building where hundreds of members gathered to let Monash Council know how dissatisfied we are at the slow progress of bargaining negotiations.
Interestingly, when they heard about action, Monash University Council moved today's scheduled meeting online to Zoom. It turns out you can work from home if you really need to after all.
While Slippery Simon McKeon didn't turn up to hear why staff are so grumpy, we did hear some fantastic speeches from Monash colleagues, both academics and professionals, as well as messages of solidarity from Monash Student Association President, Chloe Ward, and our comrade at University of Melbourne branch, David Gonzales.
After that we sang our new favourite song, "More Permanent Jobs", and many members stuck around to chat to colleagues over our BBQ.
Industrial action continues tomorrow. Come to the picket at 8.30am tomorrow morning at Clayton campus bus terminal. This will be followed by a morning tea (including Ben Eltham's special home-baked chocolate chip cookies) outside the Matheson Library. Bring a plate, bring a mate. Then back to work at 12.
The push for better working conditions won't stop there, though. Tomorrow afternoon, we go back into bargaining negotiations with Monash HR to demand secure jobs, sustainable workloads and a decent pay rise.
In coming weeks, we're also going to be ramping up our campaign on university governance. As the $127,000 party shows, the governance of Monash University is not up to scratch. It's frankly unacceptable that the Council members of this public university can continue to take tens of thousands of dollars a year in board fees, while refusing to meet with staff or students.
This university belongs to everyone, especially the staff who work here and the students who learn here. It's time Monash Uni Council realised that.
