The NTEU condemns the escalation of military conflict in the Middle East following recent United States and Israeli strikes on Iran. These actions risk widening an already volatile regional conflict, causing further civilian devastation and deepening global instability that will ultimately be borne by ordinary people.
NTEU has previously condemned the violent repression of civilians in Iran, including the killing, arrest and torture of individuals. Such actions represent a serious violation of basic human rights and fundamental political freedoms. However, this does not justify the recent actions of the United States and Israel which have resulted in further civilian casualties.
The Union notes and supports the statement of Education International - the global federation of education unions of which the NTEU is a member - condemning attacks on schools and education communities. Schools, universities, students and education workers must never be targets of military action.
International law must be the guiding principle in Australia’s response. The NTEU opposes Australian support or endorsement of military actions that violate international law and contribute to a wider regional war.
Consistent with longstanding union policy, the NTEU reiterates its opposition to the militarisation of higher education, including through AUKUS and related defence arrangements that increasingly tie Australian universities and research priorities to military objectives.
Australia’s foreign policy should prioritise diplomacy, de-escalation and international cooperation. Universities exist to advance knowledge and collaboration for peaceful purposes.
Peace is union business. The NTEU stands with workers and unions internationally in opposing war and advocating for peace, international law and cooperation between peoples.
