NTEU members volunteer at Brunswick parkrun event

Though more used to running campaigns than running round a park, NTEU members and officials came out in force to volunteer alongside National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) President Dr Alison Barnes at the parkrun Australia community event in Brunswick on Saturday 16 March.

While NTEU members and staff from the NTEU National Office and Victorian Division helped out in the volunteer roles at the Kirkdale Reserve event, many NTEU members were also in attendance as runners, with 207 participants overall, breaking the local record!

“As a union we are all about all about building community and connection, that is why it’s so important for us to support community events like parkrun," said Dr Barnes, NTEU National President.

"
At their core, unions are collections of people, and by sticking together and supporting each other we can achieve so much.”

The Union rallied to the call for help at parkrun after a member from Monash University, who already volunteers at these events, alerted Dr Barnes to the opportunity.

"Thankyou and congratulations to the NTEU staff and members involved in this successful community event."

parkrun is a collection of free 5-kilometre community events for walkers, runners and volunteers that take place every Saturday morning in many locations around Australia.

Have a look through the photos below to see the NTEU volunteers in action, including Dr Barnes flying the flag for higher education, resplendent in full academic robes.
