JCU management is proposing to remove protections and rights from our Enterprise Agreement, including:

  • Academic freedom
  • Flexible work provisions
  • Obligations to advertise vacancies internally
  • Fixed-term and casual conversion pathways
  • Incremental Progression
  • Casual employment limits
  • Classification descriptors
  • Special Studies Program
  • Restrictions on Outsourcing
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment targets
  • and many, many more.

"Take away academic freedom and universities aren’t universities any more but something else. Disgraceful that JCU management would even consider weakening academic freedom protections"
Andrew Bonnell NTEU National Vice President Academic

This is not minor administrative tidying. These are fundamental workplace protections that directly shape job security, career progression, workload protections, workplace rights, and the future culture of this university.

If these proposals get through, it would seriously undermine JCU Staff’s rights and entitlements.

If staff do not organise, participate, and push back collectively, these protections are at real risk of being lost. Contact the Branch to get involved.

It is critical that everyone joins our union, stay engaged, and share this update with colleagues. The more staff who are informed, organised, and involved in the campaign, the stronger our collective ability to defend these protections and push back against management’s attacks on conditions.

Branch Organiser Matthew Bonato will be in Cairns next week and would value the opportunity to connect with members and staff.
